Why Is My AC Not Cold Even After Running a Long Time?

This is the single most common complaint we hear from customers in Pekanbaru: the AC has been running for hours, but the room still feels warm. Before assuming the worst, it helps to understand what's actually likely going on.

The most common cause: a dirty air filter

A clogged air filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil, so far less cool air actually makes it into the room even though the compressor is working normally. In Pekanbaru's dusty, humid climate, filters can get dirty faster than in cooler cities — we generally recommend cleaning them every 2–4 weeks if the AC runs daily.

Freon running out is rare — unless there's a leak

Many technicians jump straight to "the freon is low" because a refill is a quick, billable fix. In reality, refrigerant is a closed system: it does not get "used up" through normal operation. If your AC is low on freon, there is almost always a leak somewhere in the line — and simply topping it up without finding and fixing the leak means you'll be back to square one within weeks.

We always check for leak signs first (oily residue around fittings, ice buildup on the indoor unit, a hissing sound) before recommending a refill.

Other possible causes

  • Outdoor unit blocked or overheating — poor airflow around the outdoor unit (blocked by walls, plants, or direct sun without ventilation) reduces heat rejection efficiency.
  • Oversized room for the AC's capacity — a 1/2 PK unit simply can't cool a large open room effectively, no matter how well-maintained it is.
  • Thermostat or sensor issue — a faulty temperature sensor can make the compressor cycle off before the room actually reaches the set temperature.

What to check yourself before calling a technician

  1. Turn off the unit and check/clean the air filter (usually slides out from the front panel).
  2. Check the outdoor unit isn't blocked by debris, furniture, or dense plants.
  3. Confirm the set temperature is actually below room temperature and the mode is set to "Cool," not "Fan" or "Dry."

If the AC still isn't cold after a filter clean, it's time for a proper inspection — in most cases, this alone resolves the issue without ever needing a freon top-up.
